Helen Nottage, ARBSA – Ceramic Sculpter

A graduate from the University of Wales Institute Cardiff in 2002, Helen is also an associate member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Arts, and a member of the Midland Potters Association. Helen has exhibited in galleries all over the country in the last 5 years, and also produces figurative sculptures for commissions.

She is currently studying for an MA in Art and Design (Ceramics) at Wolverhampton University.

Her work is about the fragility of the human condition, in relation to both mortality and modernity.

Helen’s technique combines body casting and press moulding with a hand built interior to provide strength to the fragile surface. Colour and texture are added to the clay prior to the building process. After the work is fired, she applies a combination of oxides and clear glaze which is then washed off to emphasise the cracks and marks on the surface.
